What is deep buccal fat?

The deep buccal fat pad is a mass of fat beneath the superficial fat layer. It sits higher in the cheek until around age 18, then gradually descends with aging, contributing to sagging cheeks, jowl-like fullness and deeper nasolabial folds. In younger people it is also a major cause of facial roundness.
